Fenix’s Responsibility & Commitment

By the very nature of its business, Fenix Marine Services (Fenix) has an important role to play to foster sustainable industrialization and logistics in the number-one freight gateway of the United States. At Fenix, we strive to be the industry leader in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), and we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of environmental, governance, and workplace sustainability.  

Fenix will always deploy the most environmentally efficient technologies commercially available, and work with manufacturers on emerging technologies. Fenix will protect its employees from harm and ensure a diverse workforce with the highest standards for ethics and governance. The Company’s social responsibility is executed in two ways:

  • internally by working within its three founding principles of sustainable industrialization, progressive people development, and business ethics & innovation in the context of its operational activities
  • by supporting the transportation and logistics industry in their commitment to sustainable development. Whether acting alone or as a member of a network, we mobilize ourselves to anticipate and accompany the changes in society, infuse innovation and respond to environmental and societal challenges

Fenix’s CSR Roadmap

Fenix takes into account the interests and expectations of all its stakeholders, thereby continuously responding to changes in its ecosystem. The Fenix CSR roadmap is structured around 3 founding principles and 15 progress objectives that all support Fenix’s growth plan, creating value for its customers, its employees, and civil society at large:

Green House Gas emissions: utilizing the most environmentally efficient engines commercially available for container handling equipment Safety: Proactively engaging all stakeholders through safety/risk management technology, analysis, communication and personnel development to affirm safety as a core value Ethics: frameworks to prevent corruption and promote ethical behavior
New construction: highest standards of equipment, vessel and environmental best practices during any construction activities Diversity & Inclusion: Empowering and promoting diversity and inclusion of all, irrespective of age, gender, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or other status Digitization: innovation and new services that promote sustainability and good service
Eco-friendly vessels: working with customers and other stakeholders to deploy energy-efficient vessels and reduce speeds while calling at Fenix Engagement: Continuously gathering feedback and improving to ensure an engaged workforce and positive workplace culture supported by frequent discussion with various stakeholders Cybersecurity: data and privacy protection
Third parties: monitoring, and auditing environmental plans by third parties Talent: Recruiting, developing and retaining the best people Transparency: setting clear goals, communicating progress internally/externally and addressing improvement areas
Other: additional environmental measures including waste handling, tree planting, replacement of light fixtures, monitoring bird nesting, amongst other smaller initiatives Local causes: Supporting the progress of local and regional communities with internal resource development programs and external initiatives Collaboration: working with stakeholders and other container terminal operators to improve the CSR profile of the industry at large

Fenix Supports UN’s Global Compact & SDGs

The Global Compact is an international initiative launched in 2000 by the United Nations (UN). It seeks to align business operations and strategies everywhere with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption.

Fenix is committed to acting within its own sphere of influence to support and promote the universal principles of the Global Compact (https://www.unglobalcompact.org/what-is-gc/mission/principles).

Moreover, Fenix follows the new sustainable development agenda set out by the UN. The agenda includes 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all by 2030 (https://www.unglobalcompact.org/sdgs/17-global-goals). As part of its corporate sustainability strategy, Fenix specifically prioritizes the 7 SDGs with the most direct relation to its core business.

                              

FMS Recent CSR Accomplishments

  • Installed the first of its kind 2.4 MW flywheel energy storage system, which: stores regenerated power from cranes for reuse; allows lower voltage power supply without infra upgrades; and, provides resilience against brownouts and poor power quality. 
  • Purchased and commissioned the second of its kind vessel plug-in power cable extension allowing a higher occurrence of vessel plugging;
  • Replaced 24 Top Lifters with new tier 4f machines;
  • Purchased 6 new hybrid-electric RTGs with 3 more on order;
  • Trialed the first hydrogen-electric hybrid top pick and first hydrogen terminal tractor;
  • Implemented a robust and formal risk management process and committee;
  • Implemented employee and customer engagement survey systems;
  • Implemented a formal employee training program;
  • Became the market leader in transportation by rail which is the most environmentally efficient on-carriage mode. 
  • Trained 100% of employees in ethics and anti-corruption practices;
  • Become one of only two Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan baseline terminals in the LA/LB port complex, by using the best available technology, training, and labor/management engagement,
  • Replaced yard and crane lighting with LED; and 
  • Reduced the Lost Time Incident Frequency Rate (LTIFR) by close to half over the last two years.
